Travel Information

Mozambique Visa's
Visas are no longer required for entrance to Mozambique if you are traveling on a South African Passport. For international passports, visa’s are obtainable from the Mozambique Consulates in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Nelspruit and Durban.

Money
Visitors to Mozambique should ensure that they take sufficient cash with them, as traveller's cheques are only acceptable at some hotels. Rands can be cashed at the Border after entering, and most resorts accept Rand or US $ notes.
Currency in Mozambique is the Metical and the exchange rate is approximately
R1 = Mt3.4 . There are credit card and ATM facilities available. Note the Mozambique government has recently dropped 3 zero's on the Metical.

Malaria
Mozambique is a Malaria risk area. Ensure that you consult your doctor on suitable anti-malaria treatment for the area and bring along additional mosquito repellents.

Food
Most basic foodstuff can be bought in Mozambique - The local markets (reed stalls) are hygienic, even if they are not the supermarket shelves you're used to. They sell fresh vegetables and fruit, seafood, bread, eggs, rice and other basics. Cold drinks and alcohol are widely available from shops. Red meat is not easily available outside of Maputo and fruit juice and long life milk are quite expensive.

Making use of the beaches
Access to beaches must be on existing roads and paths only. Please keep the beaches free from litter. It is illegal to drive on the beach unless you are launching a boat. Your vehicle could be impounded if you are caught.

When using boats
Boats must be launched from access roads. Please keep the safety of people on the beach in mind. Please do not interfere with the activities of local fishermen trying to sustain themselves. Before launching make sure you have visited the local harbor master, and paid and obtained a boat license. Launching fees are valid for 30days and cost approx: Rubber Duck Mtn363, Fibre Glass boat Mtn505, Jet Ski Mtn200, Sail Boat Mtn100, Rowing Boat Mtn75, Canoe Mtn45

Fuel
Fuel in Mozambique is fairly expensive and becomes more expensive the further north you travel. We would recommend you fill up your vehicles prior to entry. It is best to carry some local currency to pay for petrol, as it is more expensive in Rands

Driving Tips
You do not need a 4 x 4 to get to from South Africa to Vilanculos, as the road is tarred all the way. We do however urge you to ensure that your vehicle is in reliable roadworthy condition, as the roads can be unpredictable. Keep to the speed limits. This is usually 30 km/h - 50 km/h in towns and 120 km/h on the open road.

It is advisable to keep your tank filled as the distances between filling stations could cause problems and stations occasionally run out or have intermittant electrical supply to run the pumps. There are filling stations in Maputo, Macia, Xai-Xai, Quissico, Inhambane, Maxixe, Massinga, Vilanculos and Inhassoro.

Try not to travel after dark. There are a lot of people and animals using the roads aswell as vehicles without lights.
